DC Power Supply

• 24-75VDC is required for ClearPath bus power. Teknic typically recommends 75VDC for maximum motor power.
• ClearPath can run from supplies up to 90VDC, but will protectively shutdown at 94VDC, so a 75VDC supply gives you a little more design margin.
• The Teknic IPC-3 and IPC-5 power supplies are designed specifically for the unique requirements of servo control- they smoothly handle regenerated energy and large peak loads.
• One IPC power supply can typically power 2-6 ClearPath motors (application dependent - see FAQs).

Controller Cable

• This cable connects your control signals to the ClearPath motor.
• The controller cable requires an M12 A-coded connector on the ClearPath end.
• This cable can be purchased directly from Teknic or can be manufactured with the proper materials and assembly tools.

Control Signals

• Users can communicate with ClearPath-MC using digital signals. These signals are available from wide variety of devices (PLCs, switches, pushbuttons, rotary encoders, etc.).
• ClearCore is an industrial I/O and motion controller and is plug & play with ClearPath-MC servos. It can control all of the ClearPath-MC operational modes.
• ClearLink is an EtherNet/IP motion and I/O controller, compatible with any EtherNet/IP scanner.
• No control signals are required for "Spin on Power Up" mode.

Motor Power Cables

• This cable connects power from the POWER4-STRIP-S power distribution board to the IP67/66K ClearPath motor(s).
• The Motor Power Cable requires a 5-pin M12 K-coded connector on the ClearPath motor end and a 4-pin Molex Mini-Fit Jr. connector on the power hub/strip end.
• This cable (p/n CPMS-CABLE-PWR-KM120) can be purchased directly from Teknic or can be manufactured with the proper materials and assembly tools.
• If you need a custom length cable, check out CPMS-CABLE-PWR-KK660. This comes pre-terminated with M12 K-code connectors on both ends and is designed to be cut to length and terminated with a Molex 4-pin connector.

Power Distribution Board Cable

• This cable connects the main motor power supply (24-75 VDC) to either power distribution breakout board (POWER4-STRIP-S or POWER4-HUB-S).
• A 2-pin Sabre connector is required on both ends (if using either of the Teknic IPC power supplies).
• The cable can be purchased from Teknic or can be easily made with the proper materials and crimp tools.

AC Power Cable

• This cable connects AC Power (120/240VAC) to the Teknic IPC-3 and IPC-5 power supplies.

USB Setup Cable

• The USB cable connects the Infrared (IR) Converter to a Windows PC for initial motor setup and diagnostics using the ClearPath MSP (Motor Setup Program) Software.
• After setup, this cable is typically disconnected for normal application operation (but it can be used for diagnostic purposes).
• The USB connectors are Type-A to Type-C.
• This cable can be purchased from Teknic or third parties. The USB cable should be a "fully rated" cable (shielded and designed for high-speed communication).

Power Distribution Board

IP67/66K ClearPath motors have dedicated inputs for both main motor and logic power. During normal operation, DC power needs to be present on both power inputs.

• The POWER4-STRIP-S is recommended when logic backup power is not needed. This board automatically jumpers the main bus and logic pins for up to 4 motor axes.

Power Distribution Board

IP67/66K ClearPath motors have dedicated inputs for both main motor and logic power. During normal operation, DC power needs to be present on both power inputs.

• The POWER4-HUB-S provides power distribution of main 24-75 VDC bus power and 12-24 VDC logic power up to four (4) motor axes. With logic power backup, if bus power is removed (e.g., upon an E-stop), ClearPath will still communicate and monitor its position. So, upon restoring main bus power, ClearPath can automatically return to its correct commanded position eliminating the need to rehome. This option requires a separate logic power supply, typically 12-75 VDC.

ClearPath MSP Software

• This "Motor Setup Program" software is used for initial ClearPath setup and diagnostics.
• After initial setup, the motor is disconnected during application operation (but you can also use MSP for diagnostics and troubleshooting during application operation).
• You can download MSP from Teknic for free.

Logic Power Cable

• This cable connects logic power (12-75 VDC) to the power hub (POWER4-HUB-S).
• A 2-pin Molex Mini-fit Jr. connector is required on the power distribution board (POWER4-HUB-S).
• Teknic sells a 10 foot cable with the 2-pin Molex connector on both ends (CPM-CABLE-M2P2P-120). This cable can be cut to length with flying leads to your logic power supply.

Logic Backup Power Supply

• A logic power supply (12-75 VDC) is required for motor logic power backup via the POWER4-HUB-S power distribution board (e.g., PWR-IO-24VDC).
• The POWER4-HUB-S is a convenient breakout board that routes both main DC bus power and logic backup power to the appropriate pins on up to 4 motor axes. In this configuration, the motors retain encoder position and communication ability when the main DC bus power is removed (e.g. during E-Stop or E-Off). This avoids the need to rehome.
• Refer to the ClearPath user manual for helpful hints on how to properly size your logic power supply.

Using Analog Control Signals?

• ClearPath-MC can be controlled with 0-10V or 4-20 mA analog signals by using eiter the ClearCore Motion and I/O Controller or the ASU-FR510 Analog Send Unit (A/D converter).
• ClearCore has 13 points of software configurable industrial I/O with up to 4 analog inputs and 4 motor inputs.
• The ASU-FR510 may be a more cost-effective approach if you only need one axis of analog control.

USB-Infrared (IR) Converter

To eliminate a potential source of dirt/liquid ingress, Teknic developed an Infrared (IR) communications channel for setup and configuration of IP67/66K ClearPath Motors. Attach the USB-IR converter board to the rear motor USB-IR port (they are magnetically attached) to initiate communications.

• Configuring IP67/66K ClearPath servos requires a Windows PC running Teknic's ClearPath MSP (Motor Setup Program) software, the USB-IR Converter, and a USB C cable, Type-A to Type-C.
• After initial setup, the IR Communications Board and USB cable can be disconnected for standard application operation (but can also be used for diagnostic purposes during normal operation).
• Teknic sells optional IR Communication Port covers in packs of 5. These covers help protect the motor's IR port when this channel is not being used.

Don't need a power strip?

• ClearPath's main motor power ("bus power") is isolated from its logic power. This isolation makes implementing an e-stop or STO safety circuit easy and straightforward. But this means you need to supply power to both the logic as well as the bus.
• If you don't need "logic power backup," in other words, you don't want to keep the motor encoder and logic circuitry operational when you disconnect bus power, you can supply the logic power with the same power supply you use for bus power.
• As long as you are only trying to power one ClearPath motor, this can be done with a 4-conductor “Y” power cable and an IPC-5 (or IPC-3) power supply because the supply has two outputs (one can power the bus, the other can power the logic). See below:

• If your bus power supply has a screw terminal output that can safely and reliably accommodate two wires per terminal (e.g. it accommodates ring lugs), this will work too.
• If the supply has connectors (like the IPC-5), do not crimp two conductors on one pin or socket—the connector manufacturers recommend against it, and doing so will create an unreliable (and possibly unsafe) connection. Invest in the proper crimp tools, sockets, pins, and connectors—not using the proper crimp tool will almost certainly result in an unreliable cable, and system failures due to intermittent connections.
• If you are going to make one of these cables by hand, modify one of Teknic's off-the-shelf power cables that already has an M12 connector on one end. The two options are CPMS-CABLE-PWR-KM120, a 10-foot power cable, and CPMS-CABLE-PWR-KK660, a 55-foot power cable (that has an M12 connector on both ends, so it can be used to make two cables).
• Check the ClearPath motor manual for pin assignments and carefully verify polarity.

Don't need a power hub?

• Although ClearPath's main motor power (“bus power”) is isolated from its logic power (to make implementing an e-stop or STO safety circuit easy and straightforward), they share the same connector. So, you will need to make a 4-conductor “Y” power cable similar to that shown below:

• If either supply has connectors (like the IPC-5) as opposed to terminal blocks, be sure to invest in the proper crimp tools, sockets, pins, and connectors—not using the proper crimp tool will almost certainly result in an unreliable cable, and system failures due to intermittent connections.
• If you are going to make one of these cables by hand, modify one of Teknic's off-the-shelf power cables that already has an M12 connector on one end. The two options are CPMS-CABLE-PWR-KM120, a 10-foot power cable, and CPMS-CABLE-PWR-KK660, a 55-foot power cable (that has an M12 connector on both ends, so it can be used to make two cables).
